My marvellous Kent Claret vine ... I bought it from Victoriana Nursery to keep my ever-faithful calendulas company. Friend Wendy recommends the grapes for grape jelly.

Happy harvesting … my Great Auntie Bee's watercolour of farming life as it used to be, painted in 1950.

The creative mind in action … Coppicing days, Pheasants Coppice, Bishopsbourne.

History …In the garden of Serre de la Madonne, Menton. Seems I wasn’t the only admirer.

Happy birthday! ... My 50th Birthday Party 9th September 2010 at Jenny's, also with Hilda, Becca, Vittorio, Robin and Yvonne and Bianca - Caprese Michelangelo, Toscana. A very special day.

Birthday girl ... Mrs G picking flowers on the morning of her 80th Birthday, a few seconds before she realised that I had arrived.

Have you visited a zoo recently and admired humans' nearest relations, and wondered what they make of us? Poet-gardener Roberto looks out from our cousin's eyes at the eyes looking in.

A gorilla's groans

I sit behind my many bars,
And I'm always quite aware,
Of human traffic passing by,
Loud crowds of stop and stare.

You hope to see me do a trick,
That always make your iPhones click,
I might, if feeling very kind,
Turn - and show you my behind.

Which seems to please the crowd of yous,
It is the least that I can do,
For crowds of fifty, ten or two,
Caught by your lot in human zoos.

You also sit and feel, through bars,
A place you'd rather be,
Far from your ghastly customers,
Unmortgaged or rent-free.

And though your species jailed me here,
And boredom makes me scream,
Unlike yours selves I can do things,
Of which you can but dream.

For those who pay for you to stay,
Behind your bars for summered days,
Will never see your naked end,
Or will they, little, hairless friend?
