Ordinary Extra

Plan your adventure by clicking,
Then trip where advisors all say,
On deck or on-line to the Amazon,
Then choose while you’re cruising e Bay.

The exotic is faded and jaded,
Extra ordinary’s less so each day,
Now everyone’s part of the jet set,
   El Dorado’s just £10 away.

Cruise towers menace poor Venice,
   Museums over pixel’d are worn,
Queues on Mount Everest are growing,
Hands up iPhones at temples each dawn.

New colonials outnumber old locals,
   And holiday lets, real homes,
As the invaders chat to their neighbours,
   Long distance saluting with phones.

In paradises everywhere,
Tourists at their screens all stare,
As pilgrims on their ticking trails,
Fill buckets full of holy grails.

But at least we have ordinary extra,
Like raindrops, quite rounded, on grass,
Reflecting a whole world above them,
   Quietly, un-photographed.

Things ordinary extras, amazing,
Life’s true originals - like you,
Are not at the end of some rainbow,
They’re beside you in hushed tones and hues.
